Today we welcome Ireland to the game - the 54th country in Hardwood!

April 8th, 2021 - Paint the town Purple!
After a 6th place finish in League I and an early exit from the conference playoff, Evansville put it all together to win six games in the tournament and claim the National Championship. In the Finals, the Purple Aces opponent were the Tennessee Volunteers and they put up a fight to the end…only succumbing to the Aces when they missed a last second three pointer. The Player of the Game was Donnie Braden with 24 points, 5 steals and playing all 40 minutes. Additionally, Phil Kohl grabbed 21 rebounds with 16 points and Scott George dished out 11 assists. Congratulations to golfhogan and the Evansville Purple Aces on their first national title! Also, congratulations to podcast host gards710 and the Dominican University of California Penguins (Division II tournament winners) and to Gasuton and the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (Division III tournament winners).

April 6th, 2021 - Final Four
We started with 64 teams and now there are but four remaining! This season we have two favorites (#2 seeds), a League I team (at a lower seeding) and perhaps one Cinderella (with two elite players). In our first semi-final game the #9 seeded Evansville Purple Aces (I.1, 31-14, TPI 154.3) will try to upset the #2 seeded Louisville Cardinals (II.1, 36-11, TPI 161.0). In the other semi-final game, it’s the #6 seeded Portland Pilots (IV.1, 39-9, TPI 158.9) trying to topple the #2 seeded Tennessee Volunteers (II.2, 38-9, TPI 159.2). Two very competitive games – good luck to all!

April 4th, 2021 - Fast Season Flip
Please make sure you have all your end-of-the-season selections (red shirt assignments, recruiting points, rivalry games etc.) finished before the end of the tournament finals. Because of real world scheduling, the flip will probably happen sooner than usual. Thanks for your cooperation.

March 9th, 2021 - Please consider your language before you post…
Just a reminder because we’ve had a few cases where people were using inappropriate language recently. Anyway, we have a number of users that are younger. If you’re posting in the forum or press releases, please consider that fact when you choose your language. Vernacular that you use regularly with your adult friends, may not be the best choice here on Hardwood. Thanks!

Today we welcome Iceland to the game - the 53rd country in Hardwood!

February 11th, 2021 - Azusa Pacific Cougars are King!
The Cougars dominating season peaked with a crushing national tournament win over an outmanned Salisbury University Sea Gulls. The Cougars got out to a quick start, posting a 46-25 half-time lead. In the second half, the Cougars kept up the pressure and Salisbury never got much closer. The Player of the Game was Azusa’s undersized center Alejandra “Nightmare” Rosado with 21 points, 15 rebounds & 3 blocks. But it was a team effort, as all five starters scored in double digits. Congratulations to basoy6658 and the Azusa Pacific Cougars on their first national title! Also, congratulations to newcomer gnocchi and the Washington Huskies (Division II tournament winners) and to Palkify and the South Alabama Jaguars (Division III tournament winners).

February 9th, 2021 - Final Four
Final Four time again! This year we have two favorites (#1 seeds) and two Cinderella’s (lower seeds) – and any combination could happen in the finals! In our first semi-final game the #11 seeded Salisbury University (IV.5, 40-6, TPI 143.5) will try to topple the #1 seeded Mississippi Rebels (I.1, 40-8, TPI 157.7). In the other semi-final game, it’s the #15 seeded Utah State Aggies (II.1, 35-13, TPI 152.0) trying to upset the #1 seeded Azusa Pacific Cougars (III.1, 46-2, TPI 167.7). Two very interesting semi-final match-ups -will the strong survive or succumb to the upstart underdogs?

December 25th, 2020 - Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Just a big thank you to everyone who is enjoying the game and making it fun for me and the rest of the participates. I know 2020 has been a difficult year for most of us and I'm hoping the game helped alleviate some of the isolation/cabin fever. Have a wonderful Christmas season and with a bit of luck (and maybe a successful vaccine rollout), 2021 will be better.

December 18th, 2020 - Hardwood welcomes Bulgaria!
Today we welcome Bulgaria to the game - the oldest country in Europe!

December 17th, 2020 - IUPUI Jaguars National Champions!
The streak of Indiana dominance continues with Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis being crowned the champion. The Jaguars were pitted against a powerful Ball State team in the tournament final. They shot out to a 51-36 half time lead and the title looked like it would be theirs! But the Ball State Cardinals battled back and had a 79-76 with 4 minutes left to play. The Jags however were able to locked down Ball State after that and managed to pull out an 85-81 victory. Player of the Game was center Jon O’Brien with 14 points & 13 rebounds. Power forward Craig Denny also had a strong game, dumping in 27 point on 10-17 shooting. He also managed to foul out the Cardinals star forward Lou Grubbs in 13 minutes which made Ball State undersized for most of the game. Congratulations to JD and the IUPUI Jaguars on their first national title. Also, congratulations to darrylfortin and the Cornell Big Red (Division II tournament winners) and to Coachbirdy and the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs (Division III tournament winners).

December 15th, 2020 - Final Four
Wahoo….it’s Final Four time again! This year all the #1 seeds got wiped out in earlier rounds so it’s down to two #2 seeds, a #3 seed and a #5 seed. The first semi-final game features the #2 seeded Ball State Cardinals (IV.7, 46-2, TPI 161.9) vs. the #5 seeded Huntington University Foresters (I.1, 34-11, TPI 166.8). In the other semi-final game, it’s the #3 seeded IU Purdue-Indianapolis Jaguars (III.1, 39-9, TPI 155.7) vs. the #2 seeded Toledo Rockets (III.4, 44-4, 158.3). Four very strong teams – but will the experience from Huntington’s bridesmaid run last season finally pay off this year? Or will one of the upstarts captures the title? Good luck to all!

The season flip is complete! You can start recruiting, exchanging assistant coaches, setting your depth chart etc. Exhibition games will start on Monday - be prepared!

October 22nd, 2020 - Valpo Champions!
The Valparaiso Crusaders have had a stellar year – winning their conference by six games, almost winning the conference playoffs (barely losing in OT) and then finally taking up the national tournament title. Only two losses for the entire season! In the national title game, they trailed by 18 at half-time to a strong Huntington Foresters team. However, two top-scoring Foresters fouled out and the Crusaders just picked away at the lead until the final minute when they took the victory. The Crusaders were led by game MVP Randall Clevenger who had 32 points (12-16 shooting) & 6 assists. Congratulations to Gengione and the Valparaiso Crusaders on the first National Title! Also, congratulations to dkorchak79 and the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (Division II tournament winners) and the Samford Bulldogs (Division III tournament winners).

October 20th, 2020 - Final Four
The Final Four is here again! This year features several high seeds and one outlier. In the first semi-final game, we have the #7 seeded UOP Bulldogs (II.2, 35-11, TPI 156.9) vs. the #1 seeded Huntington University Foresters (I.1, 40-8, TPI 164.7). In the other game, it’s the #2 seeded Valparaiso Crusaders (III.4, 46-2, TPI 157.1) vs. the #2 seeded Ursinus Bears (III.3, 40-8, TPI 148.5). All great teams – but it looks like Huntington has a has a distinct talent advantage (highest TPI) and Valparaiso has the most impressive record (only two losses). Good luck to all!

August 29th, 2020 - 2014-2015 is here!
The season flip is complete! You can start recruiting, setting your depth chart & game plans. Exhibition games will start on Monday - be ready!

August 27th, 2020 - Butler wins second National Championship!
It’s been up and down for Butler this season. Winning the Conference One title, losing in the first round of the conference playoffs and the finishing strong with the title run in the National Tournament. In the title game, Bulter faced fellow top conference team, the Vanderbilt Commodores. It was a 3-point game at half-time and remained competitive through the second half. The player of the game was rebounding machine Tommie Worthington who had 15 rebounds and a +22 plus/minus. Surrounding him we smaller players scoring the points: 21 from Stanley Walters, 17 from Jamal Kellogg, 15 for Brock Novak and 22 from Gus Corley off the bench. Congratulations to nobodyjones and the Butler Bulldogs on their second national title. Also, congratulations to William and the Manhattan Jaspers (Division II tournament winners) and to Chaos_83 and the Metro State Denver Roadrunners (Division III tournament winners).

August 25th, 2020 - Final Four
The final four is here again and it has a decided Indiana flavor -- three of the final four hail from Hoosier state. In the first semi-final game, we have the #1 seeded Butler Bulldogs (I.1, 34-11, TPI 161.5) vs. the #1 seeded Huntington University Foresters (II.2, 42-6, TPI 155.2). In the other game, it’s the #2 seeded Evansville Purple Aces (II.2, 37-11, TPI 152.8) vs. the #3 seeded Vanderbilt Commodores (I.1, 31-14, TPI 151.7). All high seeded teams – but it looks like Butler has a distinct talent advantage. Let’s see if they can ride that home to a championship. Good luck to all!

August 16th, 2020 - Hardwood #1!
Hardwood Online College Basketball was just named the “Basketball Game of the Year 2019” by OnlineSportManagers.com. Hardwood beat out Hattrick spin-off Buzzerbeater and build-a-player game Cyberdunk. Also, 2018 saw the demise of long-time favorite Charazay which apparently was unable to revive itself. Thanks to everyone who supported for us!

The engineers were led by the triumvirate of Robbie Marks, Luis Olvera and Jamie Kohler – each scored more than 20 points in the win. Congratulations to Gambler75 and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers on an incredible tournament win! Also, congratulations to ypsports & the Cal State San Marcos Cougars (Div. II Tournament Champions) and Sagittarius & the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (Div. III Tournament Champions).

June 30th, 2020 - 2013 Final Four
The final four is here! Only four teams remain in the quest for the national championship. In the first semi-final game, we have the #2 seeded Colorado Buffaloes (III.1, 44-4, TPI 158.3) vs. the #5 seeded MIT Engineers (I.1, 32-13, TPI 155.9). In the other match-up, it’s the #4 seeded DePaul Blue Demons (III.2, 36-11, TPI 153.1) vs. the #4 seeded Arizona State Sun Devils (IV.3, 39-7, TPI 149.6). Lots of highly ranked teams with top talent and no clear favorite -- should be an exciting conclusion to the season!

In the other match-up, the #11 seeded MSU Moorhead Dragons (IV.1, 38-9, TPI 145.6) vs. the #6 seeded Maryland Terrapins (IV.2, 38-8, TPI 153.3). Lots of Cinderellas this season, the favorites has to be the 4th seeded Pioneers – but realistically it’s anyone’s ball game.

May 4th, 2020 - 2012 Season Flip Coming...
Please make sure you've done these four things...
1. Made your red shirt selections

3. Setup your rivalry games for next season.
4. Select Schedule Mode (Up/Down/Any)

May 3rd, 2020 - Server platform update prevented nightly update from running...
It looks like the platform upgrade prevented the nightly update from running (including Player Development). But it's running now which means the games will probably run about 60-90 minutes behind schedule. Sorry about the inconvenience.

May 2nd, 2020 - Platform upgrade status unknown
I know a few people have asked for more specifics on downtime. After talking with the web hosting company, they don’t seem to be able to give me a definitive answer on when or if the platform upgrade has happened.

April 30th, 2020 - Server Platform Upgrade Pending
Somewhere between May 2nd and May 5th our server will be upgraded. I’m hopeful this will mean increased stability and overall better quality of service. However, it also means the site will be down for a short period of time (approximately 60-90 minutes according to the hosting service). I also don’t know when exactly this will happen. Please let me know if you notice any downtime or see any data irregularities. Thanks.

April 22nd, 2020 - 2nd most popular game on onlinesportmanagers.com!
Hardwood was the 2nd most popular game on onlinesportmanagers.com in January and 5th highest rated game. Thanks to everyone that voted for us!

April 19th, 2020 - Server / Internet slowness…
In recent weeks, everyone is doing a lot more online…working from home, remote learning, ordering grocery/food deliveries etc. It seems like this has overloaded some conferences systems at times and definitely has slowed down how fast Broken Bat and Hardwood are able to simulate games and serve them to our managers. I am doing a few things to try to streamline things, but most of the issues are at the web host and the Internet backbone itself. I know this is annoying, because most of us are sitting home with fewer things to do – I am aware of the situation and actively trying to improve things. Thanks for your patience.

March 14th, 2020 - 2011-2012 is here!

March 12th, 2020 - K-State claims National Title!
After never making it past the Great 8, the Wildcats reached for the brass ring in 2011 and came away with a mighty fine piece of hardware. They had a dominating 88-71 win over the Lane Dragons in the Finals to capture their first National Title. The player of the game was Bradley Blackburn with 16 point & 9 rebounds, but it was really a team effort to overcome the Dragons. Congratulations to allen54chevy and the Kansas State Wildcats on a remarkable tournament win! Also, congratulations to GOD666 & the Northland Lumberjacks (Div. II Tournament Champions) and janos & the Rowan University Profs (Div. III Tournament Champions).

March 10th, 2020 - 2011 Final Four
The final four is finally here. Only four teams are still alive and kickin’. In the first semi-final game, we have the #4 seeded Temple Owls (II.1, 37-11, TPI 160.5) vs. the #7 seeded Kansas State Wildcats (II.1, 35-11, TPI 158.6). In the other match-up, the #10 seeded Lane Dragons (IV.3, 41-7, TPI 151.1) vs. the top seeded Columbia Lions (I.1, 40-6, TPI 162.3). Can Columbia follow up it’s League I title with a national championship? Or will one of the Cinderellas knock them off and claim the title? Good luck to all!

March 7th, 2020 - Daylight Saving Time
Just a quick note because the time changes tonight in most of the United States. The server and therefore Hardwood will now be running on PDT (Pacific Daylight Time). So for those of you not on daylight saving time, your games will be starting an hour earlier.

March 7th, 2020 - Fast Flip…
Because of some logistical reasons, the season flip will be starting fairly soon after the final games. So please make sure you have things like red shirt selections, use of recruiting points, rivalry games and schedule mode selections all done well in advance of the final game day.

The coasted in the second half to a 10-point victory. Player of the Game was Rich Grady who dominated the paint with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Congratulations to nobodyjones and the Butler Bulldogs on a stellar year! Also, congratulations to Stinny & the Rochester Yellowjackets (Div. II Tournament Champions) and the Monmouth College Scots (Div. III Tournament Champions).

November 19th, 2019 - 2009 Final Four
Finally, after a long season, the final four is here again. Only four teams remain – all fairly high seeds. In the first semi-final game, we have the Texas Tech Red Raiders (I.1, 38-10, TPI 152.9) vs. the Butler Bulldogs (I.1, 44-4, TPI 162.5). November 17th, 2019 - Now listed on GMGames.org!
Check out our new page on GMGames.org! It’s another news & directory site for online sports games. They also have a nice index of Basketball Management Games. Give them a visit!

November 8th, 2019 - College 3-Point Line Change
College basketball has tipped off and as many people have now noticed, the 3-point line for the men has been pushed back from the previous college line (20 ft. 9 in.) to the international line (22 ft. 1 3/4 in.). We fully expect to make this adjustment in Hardwood, but since there isn’t enough statistical data from college basketball yet, no change has been implemented.

November 4th, 2019 - Best Rated Game in August 2019 at onlinesportmanagers.com
Hardwood was the best rated game on onlinesportmanagers.com in August. We received a perfect 100% rating! Thanks to everyone that voted for us!

November 3rd, 2019 - Time Change
Please note, the time change for the game is based on Pacific Time so we have adjusted back one hour.

October 24th, 2019 - Change to Red Shirt Game Management selection
We might a slight change to the implementation of the Red Shirt selection. If a player has played in fewer than 5 games (the red shirt limit) or it's an exhibition game, the selection will have no affect on whether he plays or not (so he'll get pulled in to the game off the depth chart or bench like any other player). If the player has played 5 games already, then this selection will prevent him from entering the game, preserving his red shirt year -- essentially the same as before.

September 28th, 2019 - 2008-2009 is here!
The season flip is complete! You can start recruiting, setting your depth chart & game plans. Exhibition games will start on Monday - be prepared!

The final four is here at last. Four teams remain, three from the top conference. In the first semi-final game, we have the Francis Marion Patriots (I.1, 37-11, TPI 162.5) vs. the Villanova Wildcats (I.1, 29-19, TPI 161.7). The Wildcats are only a #16 seed, but are also on a ten game winning streak that includes prevailing in the I.1 playoff tournament. In the other game, we have the twice runner-up Butler Bulldogs (I.1, 34-12, TPI 156.8) vs. the 2004 national champion St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans (II.2, 31-14, TPI 161.4). Good luck to all!

September 20th, 2019 - More prospect interest levels for your recruiting…
Today we made a change whereby your recruits will display ten distinct interest levels for your program whereas only the previous three levels will still be displayed for other schools.

September 4th, 2019 - Changes to star ratings…
This was discussed on the forum a bit, but we will start adjusting the star ratings of prospects to be based more on both current and potential skills, rather than before where it was based predominately on potential. As such, we’ll see some shifting in ratings especially for prospects that have mis-matched current and future potential. However, this is just a recruiting evaluating adjustment – the players and their actual on-the-court performance will be completely unaffected.

August 3rd, 2019 - 2007-2008 is here!
The season flip is complete! You can start recruiting, setting your depth chart & game plans. Exhibition games will start on Monday - be prepared!

August 3rd, 2019 - Hardwood welcomes Montenegro!
Today we officially welcome Montenegro into the game. They are the 45th country to participate in Hardwood. We are still trying to locate Montenegro on the map.

August 3rd, 2019 - Recruit throttling of younger prospects…
As if there weren’t enough things to complain about in recruiting, this season well be implementing a mild form of recruiting throttle (contacts become less effective after a while) for younger recruits. In other words, pouring 50 points into that 14-year old high school freshman prospect, wouldn’t get you as far. Enjoy!

August 1st, 2019 - Pioneers prevail - Cal State East Bay captures title!
In the battle of the 6th seeds, CSU-East Bay downed the Butler Bulldogs in an exciting 2 point game. At half time, the Pioneers has a 2-point lead and managed to play Butler even in the 2nd half for the win. With 28 seconds left, the game was tied 78-78. East Bay brought the ball up and worked through their half court offense before passing it to Rodrick Atkinson in the paint for the winning score. Atkinson was the player of the game with 13 points (6-7 shooting) & 13 rebounds. Everett Hannon was the top scorer with 22 points and four 3-pointers. Congratulations to Onsilas and the Cal State East Bay!

Also, congratulations to TackoGOATFall with the West Texas A&M Buffaloes and the Christian Brothers Buccaneers for their division 2 and 3 titles!

July 30th, 2019 - 2007 Final Four
The final four is here again – only four teams remain and none of them top seeds. In the first semi-final game, we have the Butler Bulldogs (I.1, 32-15, TPI 152.7) vs. the cinderella Florida State Seminoles (IV.7, 37-10, TPI 155.9). One side of the bracket looks like the Caldarella’s while the other side is home to the favorites. Good luck to all!

Thanks everyone for signing up for play testing. In the forum, please check out the thread: Questions for play testers? The focus going forward is really to flush out issues in the basic game. I know everyone thinks they can design the perfect basketball game, but we’ve spent roughly a year to get to this point – we need to push out the basic game and then we’ll fold in an upgraded recruiting model or an advanced training model etc.

February 1st, 2018 - Play Testing Begins!
A limited number of teams are being allocated for play testing to flush out bugs and optimize user interfaces. This will probably last for a number of months at which time we expect to reset the game and all teams will start from scratch.

December 2nd, 2017 - More progress…
Version 1 of the game engine is almost complete. We have successfully simulated a full season of the game on the live server and hundreds of seasons offline. The next big step is to start to build the user controls that will allow teams to be managed by humans rather than bots.

July 31st, 2017 - Progress Update…
Many of the simulation functions are now running. Bots are now recruiting players, setting depth charts & simple game plans and games are being simulated with a very limited game engine. Still a lot to do including adding mechanisms for users to manage teams and lots of game engine improvements.
