April 12th, 2022 - Code changes…
After this most recent server issue, I’ve changed the way the games are simulated such that the rate at which they are simulated is dependent on how fast the server is running through them. Hopefully, this more server-friendly approach will avoid overloading the hardware. This also means that the timing will be less precise on when games get simulated – but if the server is lagging, that was the case anyway. Please let me know if you experience any related issues going forward.

April 9th, 2022 - Games Double Run…
Unfortunately, in the course of this server calamity, the hosting service restarted the server or various components on the server when some of the simulations were being run. This resulted in some games in the lower conferences being double run and the schedule score and box score not matching. I’ve been looking into a remedy, but there isn’t really a good one. Running the games for a third time wouldn’t necessarily be any more equitable. So, we’re probably just going to move forward as is. My apologies to anyone who feels short changed.

Also, please note that there are hundreds of people that play the game, so when something goes awry, I get lots of mail about it (which is okay). However, it’s often difficult to reply to all of them in a timely manner especially when I’m trying to fix something.

April 7th, 2022 - Slow Roll
So I ran Wednesday’s games last night and they completed. Unfortunately, the overnight player development processing didn’t happen, so it’s running Thursday morning just before game times. If everything goes smoothly with that, Thursday’s games will start simulating afterwards at approximately 10 am. The server is still running much slower than before which make all of this hit and miss still.

April 6th, 2022 - Temporary Halt
The server is still running extremely slow – such that it’s not practical to run the simulations even in a slowed down manner. So I’ve halted simulations until I can work further with the hosting service to resolve this issue. At present, I have no timeline for a fix. My apologizes for this – unfortunately we are at the mercy of the server host.

April 5th, 2022 - Server Problems
Those of you who play Broken Bat will know that the server was having extreme issues on Tuesday afternoon and into the night. Hardwood shares the same virtual server with Broken Bat, so I’m expecting there may be issues with the Wednesday morning simulations. Anyway, I’ll update you when I know more. Thanks.

But the Eagles weren’t done – and scored the final 7 points to win the game by 4 points. Marquette’s biggest edge was on the boards where they dominated by a 47-36 rebound margin. November 18th, 2021 - Roll Tide Roll!
The Penguins were heartbroken – superstar Brian Hofmeister pulled up lame for the Tournament Finals! But in the first half, the Crimson Tide with their already stacked lineup, failed to take advantage of the depleted Penguins and trailed 41-37. However, the second half was a different story, Alabama asserted itself and outscored Dominican by 15 and went on to claim the national title with an 85-74 score. Dan Nash (any relation to Steve Nash?) dominated the game and was named the Player of the Game. He had 35 points with eight 3-pointers and a +13 plus/minus. Congratulations to plokmijn and the Alabama Crimson Tide on their first national title! Also, congratulations to newcomer BigMacWilson and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Division II tournament winners) and to OrganFailure and the Idaho Vandals (Division III tournament winners).

A year after demoting to conference III.2, the Pioneers blazed their way to a National Championship by defeating Maryland. The #4 seeded Pioneers defeated the Terrapins 78-74 in a hard-fought finale. The final four is here! Four teams remain in the hunt for the national title. In the first semi-final game, we have the #4 seeded Cal State East Bay Pioneers (III.2, 40-8, TPI 163.3) vs. the #14 seeded Mount St. Joseph Lions (IV.4, 32-13, TPI 145.5). In the other match-up, the #11 seeded MSU Moorhead Dragons (IV.1, 38-9, TPI 145.6) vs. the #6 seeded Maryland Terrapins (IV.2, 38-8, TPI 153.3). Lots of Cinderellas this season, the favorites has to be the 4th seeded Pioneers – but realistically it’s anyone’s ball game.

May 4th, 2020 - 2012 Season Flip Coming...
Please make sure you've done these four things...
1. Made your red shirt selections
2. Spent your recruiting points (all carry over points above 10 will will be halved for next season)
3. Setup your rivalry games for next season.
4. Select Schedule Mode (Up/Down/Any)

May 3rd, 2020 - Server platform update prevented nightly update from running...
It looks like the platform upgrade prevented the nightly update from running (including Player Development). But it's running now which means the games will probably run about 60-90 minutes behind schedule. Sorry about the inconvenience.

May 2nd, 2020 - Platform upgrade status unknown
I know a few people have asked for more specifics on downtime. After talking with the web hosting company, they don’t seem to be able to give me a definitive answer on when or if the platform upgrade has happened.

April 30th, 2020 - Server Platform Upgrade Pending
Somewhere between May 2nd and May 5th our server will be upgraded. I’m hopeful this will mean increased stability and overall better quality of service. However, it also means the site will be down for a short period of time (approximately 60-90 minutes according to the hosting service). I also don’t know when exactly this will happen. Please let me know if you notice any downtime or see any data irregularities. Thanks.

April 22nd, 2020 - 2nd most popular game on onlinesportmanagers.com!
Hardwood was the 2nd most popular game on onlinesportmanagers.com in January and 5th highest rated game. Thanks to everyone that voted for us!

April 19th, 2020 - Server / Internet slowness…
In recent weeks, everyone is doing a lot more online…working from home, remote learning, ordering grocery/food deliveries etc. It seems like this has overloaded some conferences systems at times and definitely has slowed down how fast Broken Bat and Hardwood are able to simulate games and serve them to our managers. I am doing a few things to try to streamline things, but most of the issues are at the web host and the Internet backbone itself. I know this is annoying, because most of us are sitting home with fewer things to do – I am aware of the situation and actively trying to improve things. Thanks for your patience.

March 14th, 2020 - 2011-2012 is here!

March 12th, 2020 - K-State claims National Title!
After never making it past the Great 8, the Wildcats reached for the brass ring in 2011 and came away with a mighty fine piece of hardware. They had a dominating 88-71 win over the Lane Dragons in the Finals to capture their first National Title. The player of the game was Bradley Blackburn with 16 point & 9 rebounds, but it was really a team effort to overcome the Dragons. Congratulations to allen54chevy and the Kansas State Wildcats on a remarkable tournament win! Also, congratulations to GOD666 & the Northland Lumberjacks (Div. II Tournament Champions) and janos & the Rowan University Profs (Div. III Tournament Champions).

March 10th, 2020 - 2011 Final Four
The final four is finally here. Only four teams are still alive and kickin’. In the first semi-final game, we have the #4 seeded Temple Owls (II.1, 37-11, TPI 160.5) vs. the #7 seeded Kansas State Wildcats (II.1, 35-11, TPI 158.6). In the other match-up, the #10 seeded Lane Dragons (IV.3, 41-7, TPI 151.1) vs. the top seeded Columbia Lions (I.1, 40-6, TPI 162.3). Can Columbia follow up it’s League I title with a national championship? Or will one of the Cinderellas knock them off and claim the title? Good luck to all!

March 7th, 2020 - Daylight Saving Time
Just a quick note because the time changes tonight in most of the United States. The server and therefore Hardwood will now be running on PDT (Pacific Daylight Time). So for those of you not on daylight saving time, your games will be starting an hour earlier.

March 7th, 2020 - Fast Flip…
Because of some logistical reasons, the season flip will be starting fairly soon after the final games. So please make sure you have things like red shirt selections, use of recruiting points, rivalry games and schedule mode selections all done well in advance of the final game day.

Finally, after a long season, the final four is here again. Only four teams remain – all fairly high seeds. In the first semi-final game, we have the Texas Tech Red Raiders (I.1, 38-10, TPI 152.9) vs. the Butler Bulldogs (I.1, 44-4, TPI 162.5). November 17th, 2019 - Now listed on GMGames.org!
Check out our new page on GMGames.org! It’s another news & directory site for online sports games. They also have a nice index of Basketball Management Games. Give them a visit!

November 8th, 2019 - College 3-Point Line Change
College basketball has tipped off and as many people have now noticed, the 3-point line for the men has been pushed back from the previous college line (20 ft. 9 in.) to the international line (22 ft. 1 3/4 in.). We fully expect to make this adjustment in Hardwood, but since there isn’t enough statistical data from college basketball yet, no change has been implemented.

November 4th, 2019 - Best Rated Game in August 2019 at onlinesportmanagers.com
Hardwood was the best rated game on onlinesportmanagers.com in August. We received a perfect 100% rating! Thanks to everyone that voted for us!

November 3rd, 2019 - Time Change
Please note, the time change for the game is based on Pacific Time so we have adjusted back one hour.

October 24th, 2019 - Change to Red Shirt Game Management selection
We might a slight change to the implementation of the Red Shirt selection. If a player has played in fewer than 5 games (the red shirt limit) or it's an exhibition game, the selection will have no affect on whether he plays or not (so he'll get pulled in to the game off the depth chart or bench like any other player). If the player has played 5 games already, then this selection will prevent him from entering the game, preserving his red shirt year -- essentially the same as before.

September 28th, 2019 - 2008-2009 is here!

In the first semi-final game, we have the Francis Marion Patriots (I.1, 37-11, TPI 162.5) vs. the Villanova Wildcats (I.1, 29-19, TPI 161.7). The Wildcats are only a #16 seed, but are also on a ten game winning streak that includes prevailing in the I.1 playoff tournament. In the other game, we have the twice runner-up Butler Bulldogs (I.1, 34-12, TPI 156.8) vs. the 2004 national champion St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans (II.2, 31-14, TPI 161.4). Good luck to all!

September 20th, 2019 - More prospect interest levels for your recruiting…
Today we made a change whereby your recruits will display ten distinct interest levels for your program whereas only the previous three levels will still be displayed for other schools.

September 4th, 2019 - Changes to star ratings…
This was discussed on the forum a bit, but we will start adjusting the star ratings of prospects to be based more on both current and potential skills, rather than before where it was based predominately on potential. As such, we’ll see some shifting in ratings especially for prospects that have mis-matched current and future potential. However, this is just a recruiting evaluating adjustment – the players and their actual on-the-court performance will be completely unaffected.

August 3rd, 2019 - 2007-2008 is here!
The season flip is complete! You can start recruiting, setting your depth chart & game plans. Exhibition games will start on Monday - be prepared!

August 3rd, 2019 - Recruit throttling of younger prospects…
As if there weren’t enough things to complain about in recruiting, this season well be implementing a mild form of recruiting throttle (contacts become less effective after a while) for younger recruits. In other words, pouring 50 points into that 14-year old high school freshman prospect, wouldn’t get you as far. Enjoy!

August 1st, 2019 - Pioneers prevail - Cal State East Bay captures title!
In the battle of the 6th seeds, CSU-East Bay downed the Butler Bulldogs in an exciting 2 point game. At half time, the Pioneers has a 2-point lead and managed to play Butler even in the 2nd half for the win. With 28 seconds left, the game was tied 78-78. East Bay brought the ball up and worked through their half court offense before passing it to Rodrick Atkinson in the paint for the winning score. Atkinson was the player of the game with 13 points (6-7 shooting) & 13 rebounds. Everett Hannon was the top scorer with 22 points and four 3-pointers. Congratulations to Onsilas and the Cal State East Bay!

Their wings were accurate from beyond the arc with a 7-16 performance and power forward Ernie Thorn was the player of the game with 18 points, 13 rebounds and perfect shooting. Almost more impressive is the Lions combined 3.86 GPA – stay in school kids! Congrats to g10rsh and the Columbia Lions on their first national title!

Also, congratulations to Giannicab with the Texas Southern Tigers and lostraven with the Simpson Storm for their division 2 and 3 titles!

April 11th, 2019 - Virtual Redemption –Texas Tech wins the national title!
Texas Texas may have been fallen to Virginia in finale in Minneapolis, but here in Hardwood, their dreams can still come true. Tech managed an exciting 91-89 victory over consensus #1 overall Vanderbilt. Tech got 18 points off the bench from Brock Pryor and 15 assists from player of the game Willard Lloyd. Vanderbilt had a last second 3-point attempt by Ryan Kaufman to win it, but it bounced off the rim as the clock expired. Congratulations to Lee and the Texas Tech Red Raiders!

Also winning titles were the Southern Vermont Mountaineers from division 2 and the Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos from division 3. Congratulations to silentcal and oreohowell as well for their titles!

April 9th, 2019 - 2005 Final Four
Four teams remain in the national title quest – three #1 seeds and one Cinderella team (although with an impressive TPI). In the first bracket, we have the Fordham (31-14) vs. the top team in 2005, Vanderbilt (44-3). The other bracket features two #1 seeds – Mississippi (44-4) vs. Texas Tech (44-4). All four teams are have TPI’s north of 145 and it should be a very competitive conclusion to the season!

March 9th, 2019 - Daylight Saving Time
Just a note because the time is changing tonight in most of the United States. The server and therefore Broken Bat will be running on PDT (Pacific Daylight Time) starting Sunday. So for those of you not on daylight saving time, your games will be starting an hour earlier. Thank you Benjamin Franklin!

February 18th, 2019 - Please use caution when opening overhead bins, as items may have shifted during the flight
There was a process that didn’t complete during the season flip and some teams didn’t have their recruiting portfolios re-adjusted according to changes in coaches, conference levels, playing time etc. We have re-run this process, so you may notice that some of your recruits interest levels have shifted.

February 14th, 2019 - By nature all men are equal in liberty, but not in "basketball" endowments - St. Thomas Aquinas wins national title!
After trailing at half-time, the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans stormed back with 66 points in the second half to comfortably defeat the Bulter Bullldogs and win the national title. The Spartans were led by Doug "Saint" Price who sunk seven 3-pointers and scored 34 points. Center Oliver Blanchard also pilled in 30 points and hauled in 13 rebounds for the Spartans. The real story of the game was the referees, which called a combined 64 fouls and disqualified six players (including the entire Bulldog starting front court).

In the other bracket, we have the battle of the underdogs - #13 Valparaiso Crusaders vs. #8 St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans. In our inaugural Final Four, we have two great match-ups: #14 Florida Gators (II.2) vs. #8 Illinois-Chicago Flames (IV.6) and #1 Oregon State Beavers (III.1) vs. #3 USC Upstate Spartans (IV.2). One side of the bracket looks like the Caldarella’s while the other side is home to the favorites. Good luck to all!

Also, please note that with the season coming to an end, you need to spend all your recruiting points and double-check that the red-shirt Game Management Option is selected for players who might qualify (and you want an extra year from).

February 7th, 2018 - Play Testing Focus
Thanks everyone for signing up for play testing. In the forum, please check out the thread: Questions for play testers? The focus going forward is really to flush out issues in the basic game. I know everyone thinks they can design the perfect basketball game, but we’ve spent roughly a year to get to this point – we need to push out the basic game and then we’ll fold in an upgraded recruiting model or an advanced training model etc.

February 1st, 2018 - Play Testing Begins!
A limited number of teams are being allocated for play testing to flush out bugs and optimize user interfaces. This will probably last for a number of months at which time we expect to reset the game and all teams will start from scratch.

December 2nd, 2017 - More progress…
Version 1 of the game engine is almost complete. We have successfully simulated a full season of the game on the live server and hundreds of seasons offline. The next big step is to start to build the user controls that will allow teams to be managed by humans rather than bots.

July 31st, 2017 - Progress Update…
